What is HiveHaven?

HiveHaven is a service that sends you a planter, seeds, dirt and directions for  growing clean flowers for bees. Bees play an important role in our food production and are responsible for one third of the food we eat. But the bees are disappearing. A simple way to help is to plant pesticide-free flowers. HiveHavens are like miniature meadows with flowers that are clean and safe for the bees in your area.

Why are the bees disappearing?

There are several, interacting factors that are causing bee death

Pathogens carried by mites weaken bees, which makes them more susceptible to pesticide poisoning. On the flip side, if bees are already weakened by pesticides, they’re more vulnerable to disease.

Monocultures result in a lack of biodiversity (genetic diversity and diversity of plants and landscapes) within and around croplands, and limit the amount of food that pollinators have access to, both in space and time.

Unusually warm winters have caused plants to shift their schedules. When bees come out of hibernation, the flowers they need to feed on have already bloomed and died.

When pesticides are applied directly to seeds instead of sprayed they permeate the entire plant, right into the nectar. These chemicals are designed, of course, to kill insects. But some systemic varieties—specifically neonicotinoids—are worse for bees than others and act as neurotoxins that either kill the bee directly, or confuse them and make them unable to return to their hive.
